Description

Four molded glass candlesticks. The identical clear glass candlesticks feature a twisted rib shape around the sconce, stem, and base.

Context

These candlesticks are part of the Colony Collection by Fostoria Glass Company. Founded in Fostoria, Ohio, in 1887, the glass company moved to Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1891. There, the company began to promote their wares nationally and attracted government commissions from Washington, D.C. In the twentieth century, Fostoria was the largest maker of handmade glassware in the United States and, by 1950, produced over million pieces of glass annually. In 1986, Fostoria closed after belatedly introducing automatic machinery and struggling to compete with domestic and foreign competition.
