In 1890, the South Carolina Presbyterian Institute for Young Ladies (later the College for Women) gained ownership of the Hampton-Preston Mansion and its ornate gardens. A major attraction for prospective students, the estate's beautiful grounds remained in the hands of the College for Women until it merged with Greenville's Chicora College in 1915. Chicora College used the property as its campus until it merged with Queens College in Charlotte in 1930.
This yearbook publication, known as "Nods and Becks," celebrated the 1917 school year at Chicora College. It contains photographs of students, faculty, clubs, and athletic teams at the college, as well as images of the Hampton-Preston Mansion and grounds. The yearbook is dedicated to Wilhelmina Cozby Byrd (1869–1959), the wife of the president of the college at that time, Dr. Samuel Craig Byrd (1868–1951).Dimensions
