Description

Brass bed warmer with hinged cover. The cover, held to the base with copper brads, is inscribed with a paisley and floral design. There are piercings in the cover to vent hot air. The wooden handle is turned.

Use

Also known as bassinoires, bed warmers were used as heating instruments. After lifting the cover on the pan, the user would place hot coals in the receptacle and replace the cover. Then, holding the long wooden handle, the user placed the brass pan under the bed coverings to warm the bed at night.
