Context

Three years after saving the Robert Mills House from demolition, former Historic Columbia president Jennie Dreher (1916–2006) purchased this dinnerware set as part of a larger initiative to refurbish the house. As a result, these dishes have been on display in the historic house museum since 1967 and have been featured in period rooms and a focus gallery highlighting late-18th- through mid-19th-century ceramics. Dining ware like this—with a deep red ground and gold embellishments surrounding a land or seascape design—was commonly seen in the mid- to late-1800s.
