Gold talcum powder tin. It features a yellow, gold, and blue Art Nouveau inspired design with navy flowers and olive green flourishes. The front reads "POUDRE DE TALC" along with the scent name, "AZUREA," and manufacturer, "L.T. PiVER." The side of the tin includes a red retail sticker stating "CALL AGAIN / Wingfield's / C 13/40 / THE Rexall STORE." The other side notes “This talcum powder scented with our well known Azurea perfume soothes and softens the skin. When used after bath, produces a delightful sensation of freshness. Very pleasant after shaving. Most soothing for children’s toilette.”

Context

Known today as L. T. Piver, the Parisian perfume company was founded in 1774 by Michel Adam. Originally called Á la Reine des Fleurs, the shop featured scented gloves and a specialty stain remover that garnered the patronage of Louis XVI (1754–1793) and his court. A generation later Adam’s successors, Pierre Guillaume Dissey (d. 1823) and Louis-Toussaint Piver (1787–1877), began to market their prestigious business outside of France, and by the end of the 1800s, L. T. Piver was known as the “perfumer of the world.” As evidenced by the sticker on the side of this talcum powder tin, Wingfield’s Drug Store was one of the perfumer’s many retailers. Operating on Main Street in Columbia from 1899 to 1949, Wingfield’s was often frequented by Chicora College students eager to buy banana splits and cosmetics.
