William GladstoneContext
William Gladstone (1809–1898) was a British politician for over sixty years. He was very popular with the working class which was evident when he was elected as the first liberal prime minister in 1868. Gladstone served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for twelve non-consecutive years.
Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924) admired the British political system and would later be quoted as saying "That is Gladstone, the greatest statesman that ever lived." Wilson kept an image of Gladstone in his room.
