Context

John Veal, Sr. (c.1792–c.1880) was a silversmith and jeweler who operated in Columbia from the 1820s until around 1880. Around 1830, he was associated with jeweler Josiah Bishop (birth/death undetermined), and, from 1838 to 1841, he partnered with jeweler, weapons dealer, and industrialist William Glaze (1815–1883). A native of North Carolina, Veal, and his wife, Susanna (c.1799–1854), had several children, including John Veal, Jr. (b. c.1841), who worked as a jeweler in Columbia before the Civil War.
