Context

One of more than a dozen retail druggists in Columbia at the time of its establishment in 1899, the Richland Drug Company was originally located at 1348 Main Street. Demolition of the Kendall Building (corner of Main and Lady streets) in 1902 forced the company to move down the block to 1304 Main Street. Manufactured to store liquid medicine, this clear glass bottle was most likely produced in Columbia between 1899 and 1915. After the organization of the Laurens Glass Works in Laurens, S.C., in 1910, most local druggists began purchasing bottles from that firm. Mass-produced, bottles made at Laurens Glass Works were embossed "L.G.W." Few custom embossed medicine bottles were used by Columbia druggists after 1915. This bottle may have been manufactured by the Carolina Glass Company, which was established in 1902 at the intersection of Wayne and Blossom streets.
