Context

South Carolina native John S. Reynolds, Sr. (1848–1909) briefly saw service in the Confederate state militia at the age of sixteen, despite still being too young to enlist. He subsequently graduated from South Carolina College (today's University of South Carolina) in 1869 but did not become a Columbia resident until 1886. He was elected to Richland's General Assembly in 1896 and then served as librarian of the South Carolina Supreme Court from 1902 until his death. His research within the South Carolina House and his first-hand accounts allowed him to write and publish a series of newspaper articles about the Reconstruction Era. In 1905, "The State" newspaper featured installments of his history of Reconstruction in continuing articles, leading to the publication of "Reconstruction in South Carolina."
