Context

Believed to have originally belonged to Wade Hampton II (1791-1858), these dominos were passed down through several generations of the Hampton family. While it is possible these dominoes were “toppled”—lined up on their sides to be knocked down in a line—they were primarily used to play games like those played with cards. On their most basic level, domino games involve two to four players with each competing to be the first to rid their hand of all their dominoes. Dominoes originated in China in the 1300s and became popular in Europe and North America during the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively.
