Postcard depicting the Jefferson Hotel. On the front, the postcard features a large red brick and white stone hotel building on the corner of a downtown city block. There are smaller buildings on either side of the hotel, along with 1930s cars parked along the sides of the roads. The top of the postcard reads: "C94:–JEFFERSON HOTEL, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA." The bottom rightnad corner includes the number "44032."
The back of the postcard includes a brief description of the building: "Jefferson Hotel, Columbia, South Carolina / Columbia's largest and best / Located in the heart of the City / Mortimer Cosby, Manager." The lefthand side includes a note acknowledging the publisher: "Published by Asheville Post Card Co., Asheville, N.C." The postcard contains no written message and was never mailed.Subject

Generations of Columbians and visitors to the capital city regarded the Hotel Jefferson, located on the corner of Main and Laurel streets, as a landmark destination. Built in 1912 by local contractor John Cain (1869–1929), the Jefferson ranked among the city's best accommodations, offering both lodging and good meals in addition to serving as a venue for special events. Despite its storied existence, this celebrated building fell to the wrecking ball in 1968 was later replaced by the Jefferson Square office building and theater.Postcard Details
