Pincushions were used to safely hold and transport sewing pins or hatpins. Decorative pincushions like this may have been carried by ladies to more formal affairs. As their dresses were often made of slippery satin and silk, women were advised to discretely pin their dinner napkin to their belt or skirt to ensure it remained in place.
