Description

Appliqued hand-quilted quilt with large floral-print border and a central field of natural color with six-pointed hexagonal stars. The piece is labeled in cross-stitched on back, "Eliza C. Murchison Orangeburgh So Ca. to Aaron B Jones Manchester CT April 16, 1833."

Context

This quilt, signed on the back in cross-stitch, was completed by Eliza Campbell Jones Murchison (1793-1870) of Orangeburg, South Carolina, in 1833. Eliza was the daughter of Revolutionary War solider Samuel Phillips Jones (1759-1836) and Jane Bruce (1764-1802). Like her father, Eliza was born in Hartford, Connecticut, before the family relocated to Jane's home state of South Carolina. In 1815, at age 22, Eliza married Dr. Roderick Murchison (1793-1820). They had at least two children survive infancy, one of whom was Jane M. Murchison (1818-1828), who at age 8, completed a sampler that is also part of Historic Columbia's permanent collection (HCF 1970.25.1). Eliza, well-known in her family for her skill with needle and thread, seemed to have taught young Jane to sew prior to Jane's death in 1828. While the occasion is unknown, this quilt was intended for Eliza's first cousin, Aaron B. Jones (1812-1892), of Manchester, Connecticut.
