Andirons

Name/Title

Andirons

Entry/Object ID

1966.11.1 A-B

Description

Wrought iron fireplace log rest and rotisserie frame. The andirons have large rectangular standards with forward scroll terminals, three scrolling rotisserie hooks, cabriole legs, padded feet, and square log rests. One of the andirons also contains a scrolling log stop on the log rest.

Use

Andirons, also called fire dogs, support wooden logs as they burn in a fireplace. In elevating the logs off the ground, andirons allow air to flow under the logs and create a better fire with less smoke. The vertical key-shaped standards in the front prevent burning logs from rolling off the fire and into the room.
