Marion Edings Bailey (1898–1966), who chose to spell her name "Marian," attended Chicora College at the Hampton-Preston Mansion from 1914 until 1918. In 1919, she married William Thompson (1887–1930) of Kingstree, South Carolina. The couple had three children: Marion Thompson Hall-Altman (1920–2016), Catherine Thompson Lawson (1924–2003), and Sarah Thompson Rachlin (1925–2005). The family rented a home on Park Street in the Elmwood Park neighborhood in Columbia until 1930.
After her husband's death in June 1930, Marian moved to 1600 Blanding Street, which served as a dormitory for Chicora College until the institution’s merger with Queens College that same year. At that point, Chicora College relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina and—according to her grandson—left Marian in charge of selling various items left behind by the college. An advertisement placed by Marian in "The State" newspaper on February 23, 1931, noted "plated silver" for sale, as well as items ranging from "auditorium seats" to "window shades."
Marian kept the items she could not sell, including these spoons, and later passed them down to her daughters.Made/Created
