Description

Wedgwood ironstone turkey platter with blue transfer design and large floral border. The central scene shows ships sailing in a continental harbor with three men standing by the water's edge. Several smaller row boats also appear in the harbor, which is surround by classical buildings, bridges, and foliage.

Context

This platter was made by the well-known pottery, Wedgwood. Established by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) in Staffordshire, England, in 1759, the Wedgwood business is still in operation today. While Wedgwood is best known for their "Wedgwood blue" Jasperware design that features white, raised motifs, this platter was decorated through a method known as transfer print. Transfer printing is performed by first etching a design into a metal plate. The plate then acts as a stamp, and it is inked and then pressed against a special, tissue-style paper, leaving behind the design. The paper is then carefully laid onto the ceramic before being glazed and fired again.
