As bonnets fell out of fashion in the 1870s, they were replaced by elaborate hats until the rise of bobbed haircuts in the 1920s and 1930s. Ranging from six to twelve inches in length, hat pins were commonly used to secure a woman's headpiece and were attached by inserting the pin through the lady's hat, her updo, and then back through the opposite side of her cloche.
