Description

Half-stock double barrel Belgian shotgun with percussion mechanism made of steel, brass, and wood. There are engravings on both side of the lock, yet they are nearly worn away. The brass pieces have floral designs. The ramrod is missing. On Loan from the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.

Use

This shotgun was used in the race riot at Ellenton in Aiken County, South Carolina, on September 16–19, 1876. Today commonly called the Ellenton Massacre, the event was sparked when Black militiamen attempted to free two alleged burglars from jail. Although estimates vary, between thirty and fifty people were killed, all but one of whom were Black.
