Andirons

Name/Title

Andirons

Entry/Object ID

1972.236.1 A-B

Description

Pair of brass andirons with iron log rests. It has shaped cabriole legs, ball feet, and hexagonal lower standards. It has covered urn tops and other fluted lattice decorations.

Use

Andirons, also called fire dogs, support wooden logs as they burn in a fireplace. In elevating the logs off the ground, andirons allow air to flow under the logs and create a better fire with less smoke. The vertical key-shaped standards in the front prevent burning logs from rolling off the fire and into the room.
