Description

Seven calling cards belonging to "W. F. Boyle," whose name is printed on the cards. Cards A and B depict a hand holding flowers along with a note. The note on card A reads "Come to me my darling / Whenever I need a friend / I know that thou art faithful / And will be to the end!" Card B features the note "Take this rose and be / Forever true to me!" Cards C and D both depict a painting on an easel along with a short poem. The painting on card C features a cabin near a waterfall and the sentiments “Under the roses no secret / Dearest have I to tell / For all the world and the roses / Know that I love thee well!” Card D features a winter scene and the lines, “May gladness be your portion / May mirth come at your call / May you be glad and happy / And blessed in dower and hall!” Card E includes red and blue flowers, and cards F and G feature flowerpots inscribed "Accept my love." Nearby text also reads “The tears from angels falling / Turn to diamonds on each flower.”

Use

During the 1800s, many members of the upper class utilized personalized calling cards on social visits. When stopping to see a friend or acquaintance, the card was often given to a butler to announce the visitor's arrival or to signal that they stopped by while the homeowner was away.
