Context

Prior to the 20th century, the land southeast of downtown Columbia was undeveloped woods and farmland. With the extension of streetcar tracks beyond downtown and the establishment of the suburbs of Shandon and Wales Garden in the early 20th century, however, this formerly undeveloped land would become a center for commercial activity and entertainment. Named after the five points of the star shape formed by the intersection of Devine Street, Harden Street, and Santee Avenue, Five Points contains many of Columbia's firsts: its first supermarket, first Chinese restaurant, and first neighborhood shopping district. In 1973, one bar in Five Points, the Stage Door, declared its claim to fame by becoming the first bar in South Carolina to sell a cocktail.
