Description

Walnut desk with turned legs, leather insert on the slanted top, and a single drawer. There is a pierced gallery along the top, extending slightly down each side. A brass plaque mounted on the back in the top right corner reads, "This Desk Was Used By Members Of The SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE During Reconstruction And For Many Years Afterwards." Each of the four tapered leg has eight sides and metal tips. On Loan from the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.

Context

This desk was used in the South Carolina State House during Reconstruction. Research into the cabinetmaker used by the South Carolina government from 1868–1876 is ongoing.
