Beige and brown paper backing with an image and a 1919 calendar. It includes a beige ribbon at the top of the support and the inscription "Palmetto Guano Corporation / Iredell Jones, Jr., President / Columbia, S.C." The center of the objects features a print of a white woman with brown hair staring into the distance as the moonlight reflects off a body of water behind her. In the bottom lefthand corner of the image, it includes the name "Zula Kenyon." The image is surround by a dark brown mat, and just below it the paper backing includes the title, "Over There." At the bottom, the wall hanging features a small tearaway calendar which is attached to the backing with a beige ribbon. The dark brown flap for the calendar is embossed with the phrase "1919 / SANDS FORM THE MOUNTAINS / MOMENTS MAKE THE YEAR," along with the shape of a person riding a camel.

Context

This wall hanging was likely produced by the advertising company and factory, Gerlach Barklow. Founded in Joliet, Illinois in 1907, the company employed numerous local artists, including Zula Kenyon (1873–1947), to produce illustrations for their calendars, jigsaw puzzles, and publications. Kenyon—who designed this print—trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and was known for her sentimental depictions of children and young women. Throughout much of the 1900s, businesses across the United States purchased calendars from Gerlach Barklow to give as gifts to customers and stakeholders. This particular wall hanging was produced for the Palmetto Guano Corporation in Columbia. Managing the American Agriculture Chemical Co. subsidiary, Palmetto Guano president Iredell Jones Jr. (1873–1936) advertised his fertilizer—made from bat and bird droppings—as the official "Palmetto wheat grower." In 1922, Jones established another Columbia-based fertilizer company known as Carolina Chemical Co.
