Context

Designed in the 17th century as an alternative to gothic benches and the medieval pews that came before them, settees are essentially armchairs that have been extended to seat multiple people. Later replaced by the sofa, settees were traditionally covered in upholstery and situated in drawing rooms and long hallways. This settee is said to have come from a plantation near Ridgeway, South Carolina.
