Context

Harriet Meiggs Berry (1820–1849) was the wife of cabinetmaker Milo Hoyt Berry (1819–1907). Shortly after their marriage in 1843, the couple came to the South from Newark, New Jersey and had four children together. Five months after Harriet's death, Milo married her sister, Julia Meiggs (1822–1906). This drawing is based off a daguerreotype and matching cabinet card depicting Milo and Harriet Berry. While the daguerreotype was taken some time between the couple's marriage in 1843 and Harriet's death in 1849, the cabinet card was completed nearly 20 years later in the late 1860s by New Jersey photographer, Joseph Kirk (b.1830). Kirk also advertised his artistic ability in oil portraiture. It is possible that when creating the cabinet card, Kirk also completed this portrait of Harriet.
