Context

Written by Canadian professors William Henry Fraser (1853–1916) and John Squair (1850–1928) and published by D. C. Heath & Co. in 1913, “A Shorter French Course” is an introductory linguistics textbook based on the duo’s previous publication, “French Grammar” (1901). Modified for younger and less advanced students, “A Shorter French Course” offers insight into French pronunciation, grammar, and verb conjugation. This copy was owned by Jeanette Croxton (1900–1996) while she briefly attended Chicora College at the Hampton-Preston Mansion around 1919. In 1932, she married John Willis Massey (1891–1936), and together the couple had one daughter, Joan (b. 1933), before John’s untimely death. Jeanette lived most of her life in Kershaw County and worked as a seamstress at Superior Cleaners and a salesclerk at Belk Department Store for many years. In 1996, Jeanette was buried in the cemetery behind Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church where she had been a lifelong member.
