Two unused household inventory cards. These cards are a four-panel pamphlet with black font and red illustrations on the cover. The cards list possible rooms in a house and items likely to be found in those rooms. Advertisements for two different Columbia insurance companies appear at the bottom.Context
Household inventory cards were used to record a list of items and their approximate value within one's home. They provided insurance companies with information needed to replace items in the event of a house fire.
These particular cards, both unused, advertise Tate-Sturkie and Co. on the front and Glens Falls Insurance Company on the back. They were used to help insurance companies In 1946, Claude C. Tate (1910-1999) and Douglas K. Sturkie (1913-1995) partnered to form insurance and real estate company Tate Surkie and Co. at 732 ½ Harden Street in Columbia’s historic Five Points district. The following year, the company relocated to a new office building at 941 Harden Street. In late 1953, the company relocated its offices to 2112 Devine Street. Headquartered in Glens Falls, New York, the Columbia office of Glens Falls Insurance Company was operated in the mid-1900s by Seibels Bruce and Company out of the Palmetto Building.Dimensions
