Context

Middle- and upper-class homes during the Victorian era owned a parlor set comprised of specific pieces of furniture, including various types of chairs and a sofa, that was purchased for entertaining guests in the public space of a home. This sofa is part of a four-piece rosewood set and features simple lines rather than the intricate, carved detailing from decades prior. The Simons family likely purchased it in the 1890s from one of the many retail furniture stores in Columbia for use in the Mann-Simons family home at 1403 Richland Street.
