Use

Fire starters, also known as smudge pots, were historically used to light fires. Canisters like this were filled with kerosene or whale oil, and contained a wand topped with a porous pumice stone. To use the fire starter, an individual removed the wand—by then highly flammable—and lit the stone with a match. The stone would then serve as a fire source for approximately ten minutes as one prepared a fire in a hearth.
