Prior to the planned demolition of the Ainsley Hall House in 1961, Marvin B. Chitwood, a member of the contracted demolition crew, salvaged aspects of the property's built environment. The house (now known as the Robert Mills House) was soon saved by a group of preservationists that formed the Historic Columbia Foundation. This particular architectural element once adorned the small side gate adjacent to the carriage house and was donated to Historic Columbia in 2015 by a descendant of Chitwood.Made/Created
