Description

Small blue jasperware pitcher. It is decorated with an applied relief showing a neoclassical scene on the body of the vessel, as well as grape vines near the rim. There are two piercings near the rim by the handle.

Context

This pitcher was made by the well-known ceramics company, Wedgwood. Established by Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795), in Staffordshire, England, in 1759, the Wedgwood business has been in operation for over 250 years and continues to produce the iconic light blue jasperware Josiah perfected in 1774. This pitcher features the potter’s traditional “Wedgewood Blue” base and classical white raised motifs.
