Description
Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 2, Page 149
Photograph a [top, overlay]: This photograph (please see notes for captioning and other information) shows a view of Wister's Meadow, now Vernon Park. The photograph appears to have been taken from the rear of the property with Greene Street (most likely) in the foreground. A wire "hair-pin" fence separates the meadow from the street and the meadow is snow covered. In the foreground on the property is what appears to be the remains of the Meng spring house, the roof of which is snow covered. The meadow is interspersed with many mature trees. Barely visible through the trees is at least one building to the right and possibly one to the far left in the photograph.
Photograph b [top, under photograph a]: This photograph shows a view of the rear of Vernon (located at 5708 Germanotwn Avenue). Much of the building is obscured by evergreen trees. A layer of snow is visible in the foreground. Some large brick chimneys and two distinct roof lines are visible, as is a fence encompassing the side and rear of the house.
Photograph c [bottom]: This photograph shows a side/rear view of the Pigeon House located on the south/west edge of the Wister property (Vernon) located at 5708 Germantown Avenue. To the right in this photograph is the rear of the First Presbyterian Church located at 39 West Chelten Avenue. The house is a three story structure with a stucco facade. A one floor extension protrudes behind the house. On the third floor rear is an open wooden enclosure surrounding the third floor rear window. Two men are seen in the photograph (the one on the left holding a snow shovel). The rear of the church building shows a stone facade with butresses at the right corner and two double stained glass windows at the second story level. To the left in the photograph (in the background) is a one story (stone?) structure which is likely a part of the church.
