Urban Village Exhibit Ex114
Black and white aerial photo of Germantown Avenue above Chelten Avenue.
Label: This aerial view of Germantown in 1936 shows how urban the area had become. In 1892 a horse-car line was opened on Chelten Avenue between Pulaski Avenue and Chew Street. By 1906 this trunk line had been electrified and trolleys had branched into the surrounding neighborhoods. The automobile also brought people to Germantown and by 1930 commercial buildings dominated every block of Germantown Avenue from Wayne Junction to Johnson Street.
