Description

Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 110. Three newspaper clippings are glued to page 110. The first, 110a, is an undated article with the headline "Twins to Greet Father." It notes "Twin babies, who he has never seen, will welcome Major James Paul Austin when he returns from overseas with Base Hospital No. 10, the Pennsylvania Hospital Unit. Mrs. Austin has received a cablegram that her husband and the hospital personnel sailed from Brest, France, on April 7. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Frederick Thomas, 40 W. Walnut lane, Germantown." The article includes a photograph of Major Austin. The second of the three clippings- 110b- is a portrait photograph of Edward H. Ryan, of Pelham Court, Germantown, who died apparently as the result of being gassed. The third and final clipping bears the headline "Says Germany Quit in Time" and continues with "Writing to friends in this city, Sergeant Michael V. McGonigle, 410 West Penn street, Germantown, tells many interesting stories of the battles in which he participated. When the armistice was signed he was twenty miles of Luxemburg, and he declares it was a good thing for Germany when it hoisted the white flag." The article includes a small photograph of Sergeant McGonigle. The second article, 111b, has a headshot of Lieutenant Charles K. Dillingham, a Germantown officer who was "cited twice for bravery and wounded twice in action... His wife, Mrs. Margaret Phillips Dillingham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ryland Phillips, 330 W. Duval av., Germantown, has received notice of his second wound and his second citation for valor." The article is undated. Pages are 7.5 x 10".
