Label: Bethel A.M.E. is Germantown's only pre-Civil War black church, organized in 1859. In 1907, The Philadelphia Colored Director listed 221 members. The first building was at E. Rittenhouse and Morton Streets. The congregation now worships at 6671 Germantown Avenue in a renovated former movie theater. This is the second building the congregation occupied, their original building is no longer extant.
