Description

Urban Archives Exhibit Ex313 Label: This group was founded by Quakers in 1903 for African American boys. It was the first African American boys club in the nation. The white founders of the club first appointed an African American to the board of directors in the 1930s. The idealistic goal is expressed by the slogan: "He who helps a boy become a strong and good man, makes a contribution of the first class to the welfare of the nation." (21) The same slogan appears in the 1906 annual report of the white Germantown Boys Club.
