Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 16. Photograph a: [top] is a photograph of Carlton, located at Midvale Avenue & Stokley Street (see also catalog number 2010.134.1). The view is of the rear (?) of the house with a wide expanse of lawn in the foreground. The main portion of the house is three stories with three dormer windows visible on the third story. Thre are two two story "extensions" on each end of the house with the extension on the left much smaller in size. The extension on the right is much larger and contains a small enclosed "structure" on the third floor. The rear of the house is white (likely covered with a stucco coat). Various mature trees surround the house, both in the foreground and background, along with some mature "plantings" in front of the rear overhang which encloses a rear proch on the first floor. At least four (if not five) chimneys are visible in the photograph. Original photograph year 1904. Photograph b: [bottom] is a view of the Hocker House, located on the west side of Germantown Avenue, north of Upsal Street. (see also catalog number 2010.156.1). The view shows the house frontage on Germantown Avenue and a side view with a partially enclosed proch on the first floor. The porch has three "louvered" shutters facing Germantown Avenue. The house is of stone with three stories and two dormer windows on the first floor front. Wooden steps (with railings) lead from the pavement in front of the house to the main entrance. A picket fence encloses the property on both sides of the house and an additional "portion" of the house is visible from the rear side (not of stone). The "rear portion" of the house is two stories; however, an additional roof line and chimney are visible from the rear side view. An "overhang" is buitl into the frontage running the front "width" of the house. Windows on the first two stories have shutters. Original photograph year 1904.
