Description

Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 140. A single newspaper from an undated and unidentified newspaper is glued to page 140. It bears the headline "Philadelphia Aviator Decorated." Beneath this is a photograph, with the caption "Lieutenant Charles W. Drew, of 4623 Newhall Street, praised by Captain J. Dickinson Este, of Haverford, as "one of the nerviest members of my squadron," had the coveted Distinguished Service Cross pinned on his breast at the Walter Reed Hospital, Washington. Lieutenant Drew lost an arm near Fliery, France, when, in a desperate combat with four German enemy airplanes, he brought down two of the Huns and, despite his wounds, managed to land his machine. The Germans thought him dead but his own men finally reached him and found him gamely trying to gain his feet. Captain John Masters, adjutant at the hospital, is shown pinning the coveted medal on the young hero." Pages are 7.5 x 10".
