Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 66
Photograph a is a view of the Chew House (also known as Cliveden) located at 6401 Germantown Avenue. The house was built by Benjamin Chew and remained in the Chew family until sometime in the 1970's when it was acquired by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The photograph shows both a front and side view of Cliveden, a three story stone building with two brick chimneys protruding above the roof line and two dormer windows built into the roof line. A center arched pediment rises above the main second story window and brick columns topped by decorative urns rise above each end of the roof. A "dentil" cornice extends under the eaves and forms a triangular design at the third story side level. Beyond the main house a small outbuilding is "attached'" to the main house by means of a semi-rounded one-story structure. The side of the house and the outbuilding are stucco-covered; only the front facade is stone covered. The main entrance has two louvered doors which are encased by two columns supporting the arched pediment. Stone steps lead up to the front entance. The top step/landing supports two stone lions on each side. Two additional pieces of sclupture are shown in the left of the photograph, positioned along the circular path in front of the house. Mature trees are also visible throughout the property.Photograph Details
