Newspaper clippings associated with the Colored Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans School. All are glued to an 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper and consist of four articles.
At left is a clipping from the March 21, 1876, edition of the Daily Telegraph, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, expressing concern to the state legislature that the Bridgewater, Bucks County school has a population too small to sustain it, and that the school needs state funding for it to survive. It argues that the closing of the school will have significant adverse impacts to the education of the children then currently housed there.
In the center are two clippings- top and bottom- representing a single article, as published in the Philadelphia Times of February 28, 1876. In similar fashion, it expresses concerns that the lack of funding for the Bridgewater school will result in its closing. It notes that "We are sorry to learn now that the Bridgewater school is in some danger of extinction. As the number of inmates of the orphans' schools has year by year diminished, the State has adopted the policy of consolidating the smaller institutions in order not to increase the cost per capita. It has not been possible to pursue this course with the Bridgewater school, the Legislature being unwilling to place the colored children in a white school, or to bring white children there, and thus the allowance made according to the number of inmates has become insufficient for the support of this school. Its friends made up the deficiency for the now expiring year, but this is not likely to be repeated, and we have been told that the legislative committee hesitates to recommend the special appropriation that is plainly needed. There ought to be no hesitation." Etc.
The third article, in the upper right-hand corner of the page, was published February 29 [presumably 1876], from an unknown newspaper or journal. A small "N. A." is visible in the top margin. This may suggest it was clipped from the North American and discusses the need for funding for the Bridgewater school, and the content is reflected in letters available in this collection. The article appears to have been written in the form of a letter to the editor and "signed" by Edward S. Buckley, Benjamin P. Hunt, William Still, James A. Wright, and William W. Justice.
The fourth article was published March 2 [presumably 1876], and is written expressing similar concerns as included in the other letters. It was published in an unknown publication.Collection
