Urban Village Exhibit Ex212
Label: Augustine Neisser made this "grandfather clock" or tall-case clock in Germantown for John Wister. Neisser was a German who moved from Georgia to Germantown in 1739. Neisser made the brass "works" or mechanism, of the clock. The wooden "case," was made by another craftsman, whose name we don't know. The skills needed to cast brass gears and make the metal parts of a clock were different from those of a cabinetmaker who works in wood. (9)
(9) The clock may not have been at Grumblethorpe. It was probably in the Philadelphia house, and later at Vernon.Dimensions
