Label: George Washington occupied this house at 5442 Germantown Avenue between November 16 and November 30, 1793. Four cabinet meetings were held at the house during that two-week period.
Earlier in the month, Washington had stayed with Rev. Frederick Herman. Edmond Randolph made preliminary arrangements for these rentals. Letters exchanged by Washington and Randolph show the difficulty of locating suitable lodgings. Germantown was crowded with Philadelphians seeking refuge from the epidemic.
In the summer of 1794, the President returned with Mrs. Washington to spend the summer months at 5442 Germantown Ave. According to local tradition, the Washington family attended the German Reformed Church, patronized local businesses, and socialized with the neighbors.
The house was at that time owned by Isaac Franks. Now known as the Deshler-Morris House for the first and last families that owned the house, it is the property of the National Park Service and is open to the public. (19)Dimensions
