Description

Series of scrapbooks compiled by local historian and inveterate scrapbooker, Jane Campbell between 1906 and 1924, bulk 1912-1920. The scrapbooks are disbound and are stored in a series of 24 5" flip-top boxes, with the scrapbook pages stored in a series of folders, organized by page. Total linear feet: +/- 12. Jane Campbell lived on School House Lane in Germantown, and according to the Germantown Independent-Gazette's "Man on the Corner" column for Thursday, September 9, 1920, "No one in all this city [of Philadelphia] has a greater right to rejoice over the triumph of women's suffrage than Miss Jane Campbell, of School Lane. For more than a quarter century she has been a leader in the suffrage movement. During twenty years she was president of the Philadelphia County Woman Suffrage Society, and in that capacity she planned most of the educational campaigns which the Society conducted. She also made many addresses on suffrage outside the city, and did especially effective work in conducting debates. Persuasive rather than aggressive and never resorting to abuse, Miss Campbell's engaging personality and her fine sense of humor won friends for her wherever she appeared, and gained more personal converts for the woman suffrage cause than any other advocate of this reform."
