Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 93.
A single newspaper clipping from the Philadelphia Public Ledger of January 22, 1919 is glued to page 93, with the headline: "Philadelphian Objector Gets Ten-Year Term." In it, the newspaper notes: "Earle M. Humphreys, winner of the Harrison scholarship for philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania in 1917, is in a cell at Fort Leavenworth as a conscientious objector under a ten-year sentence while awaiting the final decision of the War Department in his case. Francis R. Taylor, who represented Mr. Humphreys at his court-martial at Camp Wadsworth, Spartanburg, S. C., said yesterday that the board of inquiry had learned the facts in the case and that it was now in the hands of the Federal authorities in Washington... Mr. Humphreys is twenty-five years old and the son of John C. Humphreys, a business man who lives at 5373 Bellefield street [Bellfield Avenue]. Mr. Humphreys is well known in athletic circles in this city. He captained the 1917 cross-country team of the University of Pennsylvania, and previous to this held the interscholastic two-mile record, made while he was a student at the Central Highy School, of this city," etc.
