Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 26. Photograph a: [top] is a photograph of the Engle House, located at 5938 Germantown Avenue (see also catalog number 2010.162.4). In the foreground is a snow-covered Germantown Avenue. The Engle House is a three story stone structure with two dormer windows projecting out from the roof with two chimneys visible above the roof line. There is an "overhang' above the first story front which culminates in an arched pediment above the front entrance. The front door is a double door with a transom. All of the windows (with the exception of those on the third floor) are shuttered. The side view shows a pediment enclosing the side of the third floor. In the side yard on the left in an intricate metal fence with a gate, the side posts of which are capped with finials. A less ornate fence runs along the side of the property. A utility pole and wires are visible along Germantown Avenue in the front of the house. Original photograph year 1904. Photograph b: [bottom] is a photograph of the Blair House located at 6105 Germantown Avenue (see also catalog number 2010.106.4.1-2). In the foreground is an ornate open-grate metal fence with high hedges beyond the fence obscuring most of the first floor level of the house. The house is three stories with a dormer window projecting out from the roof on the third story and a brick chimney visible above the roof line. The second and third story windows (both front and side) have shutters. Above the third story windows on the side of the house is a "fan-shaped" window. There appears in the photograph a part of an elaborate "surround" of the main entrance and the top roof line of a side "porch". Another building is visible in the left side of the picture. The sidewalk in front of the house appears to be brick paved. Original photograph year 1904.
