Description

Section of fence from Johnson house. Dark brown, crudely constructed. Two upright log stiles with 5 slats attached by nails and secured with top brace. Cross pieces have many holes - Reputed to be rifle ball holes from the Battle of Germantown. There is some disagreement as to where this fence one stood. The undated (but circa 1915) entry in the accession book simply refers to the section of fence as the "Johnson fence." However, two houses associated with the Johnson family stood near to each other- one at 6306 Germantown Avenue and known for being a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the other, at 6316, a short distance away and also owned by a member of the Johnson family. A photograph showing a fence made in similar fashion to that shown here is located in the collection of the Germantown Historical Society; it describes the fence shown in the photograph as that of "Cedar fence in rear of Elwood Johnson's House" [6316 Germantown Avenue]. So the exact provenance of this fence section is unclear.
