Description

Series of 26 wooden figurines, some of which are stamped "Made by Germantown High School, Philadelphia, PA" [GHS] on their bases. The figurines are painted "cut outs" glued onto rectangular wooden stands, and each depicts a pilgrim in Chaucer's A Canterbury Tales. All are on horseback. Undated, but perhaps circa 1920s-1950s. Includes sign which was apparently displayed with the figurines. The donor thinks the figurines were once part of an exhibit installed in the Children's Department of the Main Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia at Logan Circle. See 2021.11.27 for associated sign. The figurines appear to have been painted by two different artists. Numbers .1, .2, .3, .4, 5, .25 and .26 appear to have been painted by one artist; the remainder, by another. The characters [pilgrims] are noted below: .1 Chaucer .2 Squire .3 Squire [Knight's son] .4 Yeoman .5 Prioress .6 Nun .7 Monk .8 Friar .9 Merchant .10 Sargent of Law [Man of Law- stamped on back made by GHS] .11 The guildsman [stamped on back made by GHS] .12 Cook .13 Skipper [Shipman] .14 Doctor .15 The Parson [in three pieces] .16 The Ploughman .17 The Manciple .18 The Reeve [stamped on back made by GHS] .19 The Summoner .20 The Pardoner .21 Harry Bailey [Host] .22 The Nun's Priests .23 The Carpenter and Haberdasher .24 The Clerk .25 The Canon [stamped on back made by GHS] .26 The Canon's Yeoman [stamped on back made by GHS]
