Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, letter glued between pages 137 and 138.
A letter written on November 1, 1917 and sent to Dr. Naaman H. Keyser of 33 High Street by G. V. Joyca, including envelope. In the letter, Joyca writes "Dear Friend, A line to let you know that you have not as yet had a chance of picking up a jaw bone of an individual whom you said you would recognize well Dr. we had a long but very pleasant voyage on sea and have travelled a good bit overland and have seen some old, historic and interesting places we are now in a very old town I am at present engaged in a shop here but am being in hope of being transferred to another command and getting up where there is something doing. the work you did for me before I left has been a comfort to me and I have not had the least trouble but we had an issue of hard-tack on one of our long trips and I broke the filling out of one of the back teeth but I expect to get it fixed up as we have a dentist along with us. We are in a barricks [sic] here and have it better than a good many of the boys, our eats are fairly good, our one failing point is to-bacco which we cannot procure here. I have been able to get but 4 bags of tobacco while in this town they have a concoction on sale but it would knock your eye out American goods we would pay any price but cannot obtain it. I have not heard from the old home town since I left and think of it many times I suppose it is right to the front with its quota of recruits, some of the boys have received Phila. papers and I see you are having a political scandal there and I guess it is some interesting, suppose if it all comes out New York can take a back seat. Well I do not know of anything further that I would like to be allowed to tell you know but it will all keep and be food for a good old timer talk when I get back. I remain Garrett V. Joyce., Co. C 19th Engineers (Railway) H. E. F. via New York."
