Label: Friends in Germantown as elsewhere supported education for their children. Pastorius operated a school during the community's early years and the Meeting later supported the Union School afterwards known as Germantown Academy. In 1845 the meeting founded Germantown Friends School. After an unstable beginning, the school was reopened in 1858 and has operated ever since.
In this view, the original building is the small white structure in back. In 1869 the school constructed the fron building. (4) [please verify that the accompanying photo is GFS]
