Description

Black and white photograph the Hesser - Bayard House, 6749 Main Street (Germantown Avenue). Notes on back: "George Hesser Home", "duplicate of glass neg. box 1 #16 (J-102)", "Hesser - Bayard House. On the site of 6749 Germantown Road and directly opposite the settlement of Pelham stood this notable landmark. Built in 1777 by John Hesser. A story is told in connection with this property that at the time of the Battle of Germantown October 4, 1777, the cellar for this house had just been completed. Such a good size excavation proved a great temptation for those who were burying the dead and it was used for a wholesale grave and the owner was obliged to abandoned [sic] the site and start again further down the road. This property was for many years the home of the Bayard family and many social events were held here. The house contained 35 rooms and the grounds covering several acres were most extensive in their layout of gardens planting. The property was sold by the Bayard Estate in 1907 to make way for a development of 100 houses.
